Our Five Purposes
At Cornwall we encourage each person to pursue what we call a “fully-devoted life” for Jesus. We believe there are some foundations that God would like every follower of his to strive towards. We believe these foundations were five purposes that existed among the earliest followers of Jesus:
Outreach: Sharing God’s story with others.
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19–20)
Spiritual Formation: Building spiritual disciplines into our lives.
I pray that your love for each other will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in your knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until Christ returns. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—those good things that are produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God. (Philippians 1:9–11)
Worship: Celebrating God’s presence.
And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. (Mark 12:30)
And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father. (Colossians 3:17)
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? (Romans 12:1)
Community: Caring for one another as God’s people.
For I long to visit you so I can share a spiritual blessing with you that will help you grow strong in the Lord. I’m eager to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours. In this way, each of us will be a blessing to the other. (Romans 1:11–12)
So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. (John 13:34)
Serving: Serving God by using our talents, gifts, and resources.
God has given gifts to each of you from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Manage them well so that God’s generosity can flow through you. (1 Peter 4:10)
Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5–8)
